Water Footprint

Impact assessment on water resources
The problem of availability of fresh water for the planet’s population has long been recognized as a global water crisis. Along with the well-known global challenges, the need for rational use of water resources and reduction of the water footprint – the impact of human economic activity related to water – is becoming increasingly important.

Among key tasks towards achieving sustainable development goals the UN 2023 Water Conference identified “designing and implementing a new global water information system to guide plans and priorities by 2030”.

Services provided in this area:

1
Water footprint assessment including Client’s impact assessment on water resources, comparing water use metrics to industry best practice and the best practices from other companies (benchmarking), developing water footprint reduction strategy
2
Integrated assessment of water use in connection with ecosystem services, biodiversity and climate risks.
3
Assessment of social risks associated with the competition for water resources between the population and companies posed by growing demand for water, especially in water-deficient areas.
4
Developing water reports for a wide range of stakeholders, including the media and local communities concerned about water availability and quality.
In implementing projects we are guided by:
  • UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 “Water and Sanitation”
  • Vision Statements of the 2023 UN Water Conference
  • GOST R ISО 14046-2017 Environmental management. Water footprint. Principles, requirements and guidelines
  • ICMM Water Reporting: Good Practice Guide
Today, publishing water reports is not mandatory. However, judging by the growing attention of the world community to the water problem, soon we can expect the adoption by international organizations of mandatory requirements for water footprint assessment and reporting on water use, similar to the requirements for assessing and reducing greenhouse gas emissions

A water report is a document that demonstrates commitment to sustainable water use.

A low water footprint, along with a low carbon footprint, gives a product or raw material an additional competitive advantage as being more environmentally friendly

Based on our extensive experience in assessing projects with international funding we prepare water reports with a detailed analysis of water use and with consideration of ecosystem services, biodiversity and climate risks. We also propose measures to reduce the company’s water footprint based on international requirements and best industry practices.
